So sad...
Thanks to the Opponauts who have done their part.
Green cars in the comments, please.

You already know how I fee l about it. Looked an an E30 this weekend, paint is beat and my wife says, “What color green are you going to paint it?” Haha.

That’s a good green.

For future reference, whence that graph?

I’ve owned 2 dark green cars and love the color on a car
Right now we own a white and a black car and we don’t like either color, but they we re the car with the price and options we wanted. They’re the first car in either color in our stable. The Mrs wants a colorful racing stripe on her white RAV4 to spice it up a bit but I don’t feel confident enough in my skillset to do that.

Losing that and Bikini in the same year was a harsh blow. 2020 strikes again.

Despite my Aristo being black, Imperial Jade Mica is my favorite color for it.

See, for all the complaints about the scourge of silver cars, clearly the real issues are white and grey cars! (Silver car owner, who would rather have bought dark blue or red).

I helped a friend put a yellow stripe on his black hatchback once, but I also worked in a sign shop for a while...
Our cars were silver, bluish gray and battleship gray until we recently swapped my silver for red. My car history is white, burgundy
, black, (back in same burgundy
), black, silver, white, gray, and now red. I’m thinking a nice blue next...
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:19 |

What’s worse than just the loss of green (so sad) is the increase in the dominance of grey scale cars, going from 55% to 75% market share.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:20 |

Mr. Daves you’ re asking difficult questions for a Monday morning! Lol.
Probably “Fern Green”
Other thoughts are around “Boston Green”, “Evergreen”, “Acacia Green” (Acacia Green is a very rare factory E30 color but too close to the color of the 02 ). Thought about a few bright greens also. Porsche “Chartreuse” or “Lee Green”. Lee green is a custom color that I found on a 911 instagram. https://www.instagram.com/thatporschegirl/?hl=en but not sure how I feel about a bright green.
We can get into purple if you want lol.

It such a great color on the taco in particular , but unfortunately it looks good on a lot of vehicles.

Where have all the purple cars gone is more relevant... in Poland at least.
Sadly Porsche is about the only auto maker offering green on new cars you might encounter more than one of any given day.

I will say, a flat
battleship gray has much more character than the medium
metallic grays
seen on way too many cars these days. I think it looks great against all the black trim pieces on my truck.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:28 |
|
as the owner of a green 1997 LX450, this makes me sad. i’ve seen very few cars that don’t look better in green.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:29 |

Hold up, the real story here is that brown has like a 2% market share and green doesn’t even show up. What? Since that’s almost exactly the same market share as beige, do you think just half of people mislabel their cars as brown instead of beige?
Poor poor green. It is my favorite car color.
Some colorful cars in my life:
I do my part, but reddish orange is no green.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:31 |
|
Mine going back has been: Maroon, black/grey (forgot about the Ford truck), salmon (awful color),blue/white, green, green, blue/grey, red, blue, red, teal, black.
I’ll probably bite the bullet and order some 3m vinyl and give it a try on the wife’s car. I’ll definitely post results if I work up the nerve.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:31 |
|
I’m sure you could do a fun vinyl stripe over a weekend with a little research. I say go for it! Martini stripes for all!
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:34 |
|
Silver is my least favorite car color so I’m quite happy to see it go from 20% market share to 10% market share in 10 years.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:35 |
|
Jeez, if you want a car that’s an actual color, ANY actual color, from like 2004 on you’re eliminating 75% of cars right off the bat.
There are more cars that are grey or silver than there are cars that are a color
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:36 |

The Civic hatch’s Sonic Grey looks fantastic as well.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:36 |

Techno violet is the most appropriate color and probably the easiest/safest choice for me personally. It’s in my back pocket. The spicy side of me is leaning toward a flat purple like Aubergine.
I can’t find much on the color of that Spicup. Reverse image searched it and found a few articles about them but most refer to them as being in their “original green on green” or the “original hue of green”. Very unlike a G erman m anufacturer (particularly Porsche or BMW) to not have a name for a color.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:37 |

Tvr sagaris teal?
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:37 |

Wow thats a sad graph. Color was 60% not too long ago, now just 30%.
I’ll keep buying colored cars and I would love a green car again (had a 98 Grand Cherokee in dark green).
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:38 |
|
I’ve seen others here do it and while not easy seems doable. I’ll eventually get up the nerve, her white rav4 just blends in like nobody’s business. I’ve literally walked up to the back of another car in the grocery store lot before and wondered why the hell the back hatch wasn’t opening .
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:39 |

Too much metal flake kills a lot of red/blues for me too.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:39 |
|
What happened to green? It’s not like it can be considered obnoxious like yellow and it looks good on most cars, but in a 10 year span it went form being what looks like around 20% of the total to just a sliver of it.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:40 |

White cars are a scourge that needs to be stopped. Gray, when done decently , is the color I find least objectionable on the monochrome scale.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:40 |

I’m of the opinion that silver is a good color, but it certainly doesn’t need to be the only color. Having m ore colors is a good thing!

Your mom's awesome!
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:46 |

Damn yeah that is nice! I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to like that on an E30 then I googled teal E30...
Use a drop of eye bleach in one eye before you look at the pics below. It will help you see through the stance.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:48 |

I’ve owned 3 green cars. All three were from the 90s. 92 Camry, 97 Tacoma, and a 97 Integra GSR. And my motorcycle which is also a 97 is green Altho it’s a bit more blue in the sunlight so it’s almost teal.
Now, with the orange VW gone, I’m in the majority with just a boring grey car. But at least my wife’s car is a color. Tide Water Blue which looks kids purple most of the time and bright sky blue in direct sunlight.
Pictured here with a Midnight Plum Fit which was the color I wanted but couldn’t find any.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:48 |

I’m going to go ahead and take credit for that one. She actually didn’t want green, but my dad and I sold her on it because it had everything else she wanted
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:50 |
|
That makes sense. I think the gold and beige would be a lot bigger in the US, at least until like 2003.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:50 |
|
Yes. Having more diversely colored roads is a good thing. The four cars belonging to members of my nuclear family are green, silver, dark gray, and reddish orange so we’ve got a lot of variety going on. I think that’s a good thing.
It’s a surprisingly well rounded fleet. Two four cylinders, one turbo 5, one V8. Three FWD and one 4WD. 3 five seaters and one 7 seater.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:54 |

I remember that happing a few times when my mom drove a black Ford Exploder. I actually have mistook a different Cruze for my own once but not to the point of getting in. The extremely rare color certainly helps on that front but sometimes it can be a curse. Like when I see a different autumn metallic Cruze drive by and make sure mine is still there, etc.
I would encourage you to give it a try. An off center stripe would probably be easier to make look good.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 10:59 |

Not to mention how hard it is to find a good color on a dealer lot even if you are buying new and want to contribute to the color gang.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 11:00 |

Green cars for sale in the U.K. now.
Audi
Ford
Citroen
Skoda
Yes, I know to you and me, it’s metallic gold or yellow but it’s called ‘Dragon Metallic Green’. Lol.
VW
and a few others.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 11:05 |

No orange listed at all? Is it that rare?
![]() 10/12/2020 at 11:05 |

FWIW like all the trucks have a brown option. Some are dull/muted but they’re such a large part of the market and dealers probably want some kid of color on their lots.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 11:07 |
|
Ehh I can just use my hand to cover those wheels. Not a fan of those particular shades, teal has to be just right to work. I expect that TVR is some ridiculous expensive multistage paint but I would like to get my T/A repainted in it.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 11:08 |
|
True, I’d forgotten about the subdued dark browns on pickups.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 11:11 |
|
Yeah I mean its almost certainly a “chameleon” job of some kid. All of the wild TVRs are. Really nervous about a bright color in general on a non M E30. I will almost certainly go with a dark green or dark metallic purple for the car that I don’t even own yet.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 11:16 |
|
They did have a blue green chameleon as well. I can’t ever find specific
info on the paint codes.

I have owned my share of green vehicles. Would definitely buy green again, but as I have discovered, not the easiest to sell.
Green vehicles I have owned:
Emerald Turquoise Metallic 1967 Chevelle
Meadow Green Metallic 1968 Chrysler 300
Black Ja de 1969 Ford Torino
Rallye Green 1969 Road Runner
Amazon Green 2001 Mazda B3000 Dual Sport

Ahh that’s better. My parents used to have a BRG 95 Camry too. It looked pretty great when it was clean (seldom)

On older cars, yes.

Assuming it’s cheap, it’s easy enough to just remove if you don’t like the results. We did an offset stripe on his that was one thick and one thin.

plays into people’s decision to buy white/black/gray/silver new?
![]() 10/12/2020 at 11:48 |

Oh me too
That one apparently is and looks closest to the bottom of the two I posted. I wouldn’t say no to it, but don’t know if I’d choose to paint it that color having all of the other choices.
Also have always wanted “ Rosso Corsa” on something German.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 11:48 |

Apparently... in Poland. LOL
Realized after I posted (taken from TheDrive).

Dude... just picture a photoshoot with your green, teal and yellow BMWs all lined up. Not trying to tell you what to do, but just saying, make sure whatever color you pick plays nicely with your other two. =)
Are you really buying another car?
![]() 10/12/2020 at 11:57 |
|
It’s sort of a cheat color, called Black Forest Green. Think of it as a b ritish r acing g reen with a black pearlescent overcoat. Unless you’re up close or in direct sunlight it’s almost black but otherwise you can see the green pop through.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 11:58 |

Looks great.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 11:58 |

Originally “had to have” my Alltrack in “Great Falls Green” (top pic). Then I saw it dirty, in person and didn’t really like it. It was flatter and bluer than any pic I have seen.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 12:05 |

That Mazda B3000 took forever to sell, also because manual trans.
I told used car dealer my difficulties of trying to sell it , while shopping with a friend for a Porsche 911, and asked what he thought. First thing he asked “It’s not green, is it?”. Strike one..... then he asked if it was manual... strike two. Being a Mazda was probably the third strike. If it was a green/manual Toyota PreRunner, I am sure it would have sold quickly.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 12:06 |
|
Haha it will definitely have to jive with the other two. I’m looking at every “project” spec E30 coupe that I get a whiff of.
But t o truthfully answer your question though, no I am not. I actually rolled back removing the clear bra on the M3 too. All because of the up front costs of the addition. I knew we’d need an architect and likely a site engineer but I didn’t consider the fact that they will probably need to get paid before I refi my house...
This is not to say that I won’t make a move if something amazing pops up, just being careful until we know exactly what we’re doing.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 12:07 |

I drive a green car, though it was built back when green still had a decent marketshare.
Looks like around the time Jalopnik started on the BDMW thing, browns started picking up again.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 12:12 |
|
For a couple of years I had in mind to go for the Superb in ‘dragon green metallic’ (metallic gold/yellow), but chose Scarlet Red Metallic but the lead time was too long and the called order we picked up (and too late to change) was for a Champagne Silver Metallic.
![]() 10/12/2020 at 12:15 |

Yep.
I’ve never once thought of resale when buying a car, however. I’ve considered how it might retain value, I guess, which is similar, maybe?

Sheesh, if gold/beige were never popular, how come I still see them everywhere? Those darn old people are so stuck up in the times, they never even stopped to think about if beige was ever a good car color...
Very cool graph though.

New cars seem to be going heavily earth toned. Still whites and blacks, but a lot of grey (no metal flake or pearl), brown, grey-aqua, gotta think green will be in that mix too

Resale value generally hasn’t been included in my buying decisions. I buy what I like, good resale or not. On the other hand, when I am asked for suggestions on what to buy, reliability and resale are very much part of my suggestions.
